Hark! Former Danity Kane goddess Dawn Richard is stepping out with her introductory solo mixtape.
There’s a lick of indie arty persuasion in her blog posts and mixtape cover art but the sonics here don’t actually stray too far from the contemporary R&B colourings she made her fame with.
A Tell Tale Heart is a collage of dark, percolating beats and emotive lyrics. Therefore, fans of Brandy, Shontelle and cohorts of the same deep pop R&B persuasion will probably adore this to no end.

Further evidence that the dames of Danity Kane are all of quality stock and, had they handled their business properly, there’s no reason why they couldn’t have ruled the charts as a collective.
However, something tells me Dawn wasn’t cut like all the others. There’s always been hints of an independent, fighting artiste in her. Note, she was the one who came up with the band name inspired by a comic book creation of hers.
Dawn‘s own musical interest is a little more alternative inflected – check: Florence + The Machine, Peaches, Melissa Etheridge and Little Dragon – so it’ll be interesting to see if she’ll unleash herself sonically and dabble in a little indie/pop later down the track.
Imagine that! She could well do a Solange and breakout as an underground, independent artist in her own right.
