Chart Feed – 13.06.11

Adele has got the singles chart shook now with two Top 5 hits. Her second 21 single ‘Someone Like You’ was issued to Aussie radios last week and after much tugging on heart strings/ bursting into tears in the middle of the freeway/ sobbing quietly in your office cubicle – the song shoots to #4. Over on the Australian album charts, 21 and 19 bookend the Top 10 with the former ascending to #1 ending Gaga‘s two-week reign on top.

Nicola Roberts‘ debut solo single ‘Beat of My Drum’ enters at #27 in the UK, reportedly selling 12,851 first week copies. I mean, damn. The chart placement itself is simply too close to Nadine‘s flop single ‘Insatiable’ which came in at #26 last November but if you actually look at the sales figures, Nicola has evidently outsold her Irish bandmate. FYI: ‘Insatiable’ only managed to sell 117 physical copies and 2,439  first-week downloads. This is still not good enough, my British friends. Please take ‘Beat of My Drum’ higher.

I mean, let’s be real here. Nicola will never match the stratospheric figures of Cheryl‘s X Factor-promoted singles like ‘Promise This’ (157,210 first-week sales) and ‘Fight For This Love’ (292,000 first week sales). But it deserves to at least go Top 15.

Coldplay‘s comeback track ‘Every Teardrop is a Waterfall’ debuts at #6 in the UK and #14 in Australia. ‘Every Teardrop…’ is also the most added new song to Aussie radios this week. Over in the US, the single cracks the Billboard Hot 100 at #29, selling over 85,000 first-week copies. The band’s as yet untitled fifth studio album is still being finalised as we speak but they recently premiered five new tracks live at Germany’s Rock am Ring festival: ‘Hurts Like Heaven’, ‘Us Against The World’, ‘Charlie Brown’, ‘Princess of China’ and ‘Major Minus’. They might all make the cut, you’ll just have to wait and see.

Beyonce‘s ‘Best Thing I Never Had’ debuts at #29 in Australia this week while ‘Run The World (Girls)’ drops ten spots to #20. The track came in at #30 on our ARIA digital charts, making it the third most downloaded new single in Australia behind Coldplay‘s new one (#14) and Pitbull/Chris Brown‘s ‘International Love’ (#27). Over in the US, ‘Run The World (Girls)’ sinks to #55 after peaking at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 last week. Elsewhere, the stunning album track ‘1+1’ drops to #89 on the Billboard Hot 100.

‘Best Thing I Never Had’ debuts at #53 on the US Billboard R&B charts and #84 on the Hot 100. Surprisingly enough, the song is the second most added new song to Aussie radios this week. Alright, it’s all buzzing in the Beyhive now.

Nicole Scherzinger‘s ‘Right There’ soars to #3 in the UK this week, making it her third consecutive solo Top 3 smash there. OK, I didn’t think it could happen but bravo, mami. I’mma have to send her some flowers. Meanwhile, ‘Don’t Hold Your Breath’ is still in the Australian Top 20, now certified gold sales. The Killer Love album moves back up the UK charts to #22 but Australian and American fans are still hanging tight to see what we’ll get with the forthcoming US edition. Last time I checked, Killer Love is still slated for a 12 August release in Australia.

Seeker Lover Keeper – made up of unstoppable A-grade indie/pop artists Sarah Blasko, Holly Throsby and Sally Seltmann – sees their self-titled debut enter at #3 this week. It’s not only the highest selling Australian album here this week but also the biggest selling new entry. Given that the project is headed up by three established solo acts, Seeker Lover Keeper has launched three singles, each with their own video, featuring one of the girls as the lead singer. Could you see Young Divas doing something like that? Didn’t think so.

Watch one of their new videos ‘Light All My Lights’:

Cute, non? There’s a twist with the videos! Watch them all here.

Arctic Monkeys‘ long-awaited album Suck It and See debuts straight in at #1 in the UK and #4 in Australia this week. This is a good track record for the Monkeys, who is now the second band in UK history to have four consecutive studio albums debut at #1 there. The only other band to have accomplished the same feat is Keane. Best thing I’ve heard about the release so far was this laughable censorship bullshit going on in America. Apparently album title has been deemed “rude and disrespectful” by some major supermarket chains so they’re slapping a sticker over the cover. Yes, they’re really doing that

Kylie‘s Aphrodite shoots back up the charts to #14 this week as she continues to play shows around the country. Sydney and Brisbane have had their fix and splash. Tomorrow night is the first Melbourne show and I’m ready for you, mama. ‘Put Your Hands Up’ creeps into the ARIA singles chart at #50 this week. Boo, hiss etc.

Was there a fucking flash sale of some sort last week? Because it looks like a couple of the current bargain bin titles have re-entered or shot up the Top 50 this week. Check it out: The Script‘s Science & Faith, Ke$ha‘s Animal and Lady Gaga‘s The Fame all returned to the Top 30. Black Eyed PeasThe E.N.D., Glee‘s Season One Volumes 1 and 2, Taylor Swift‘s Fearless, Taio Cruz‘s Rokstarr and Ronan Keating‘s 10 Years of Hits re-enter our Top 50. And yet, no sign of Erika Heynatz‘s album – what is wrong with this country?

The Potbelleez‘s new album Destination Now is now out of the Top 20 after debuting at #17 last week. The record slips to #26 but looking at all the major international artists they are fighting chart space with, I really don’t think Destination Now can reign very much longer just on the leg of ‘From the Music’. ‘Hello’ was a major smash but gawd, that felt like a lifetime ago. It’ll be interesting to see what they’ll pick for the fourth single. Anyone care to nominate a fave?

Christina Perri‘s ‘Jar of Hearts’ soars to #23 in Australia. Yes, it is catching on as planned. Well done. Meanwhile, Sneaky Sound System‘s new single ‘We Love’ debuts at #20 on the Aussie dance charts. What is not to love about this song? It sounds like a cheeky Kelis‘ summer jam. Take a look at the cheeky video:

Calvin Harris‘ new single ‘Bounce’ featuringKelis cracks our Australian club charts at #32 this week. I like it as it is. It’s actually pretty decent music to clean your room to but I imagine there’d be several completely sick’ning remixes reserved for the dance floor. Report back if you’ve heard anything.

The Saturdays‘Notorious’ continues to travel south of the UK charts but how’s this for a marvelous twist? Their next single ‘All Fired Up’ is produced by Xenomania – the hit factory behind Girls Aloud‘s discography – and Space Cowboy (Lady Gaga circa The Fame). This should be delicious. Will they be Xenomania’s new girl band muse? ‘Notorious’ drops to #33 in the UK this week. The gang just announced arena tour dates around the UK over December. Umm, they’re doing Wembley. Should we be worried?

Wonderland‘s debut self-titled album enters at #8 while their new single ‘Starlight’ breaks in at #57 in the UK this week. I wish they were more memorable. Really, I do. Wonderland is basically the brainchild of X Factor judge/industry heavyweight Louis Walsh and Westlife‘s Kian Egan – think: bankable style of Taylor Swift country pop done by five gorgeous girls. Care to invest?

Check out their latest offering ‘Starlight’ and tell me if you like:

Y’know, gotta give props where props are due. This was a tough week to launch your record – not only were you up against the unwavering forces of Adele and Gaga, but there were six other new entries in the UK Top 20 this week. Wonderland has done pretty well to be the fourth best selling new album.

Paramore‘s new single ‘Monster’ debuts at #21 in the UK this week. Other new and exciting movers include The Wombats‘ fourth Modern Glitch single ‘Techno Fan’ going from #100 to #60, LMFAO and Natalia Kills‘ ‘Champagne Showers’ debuting at #71, and Josh Groban‘s ‘To Where You Are’ entering at #53. Yeah, we got love for The Grober here.

Martin Solveig and Dragonette‘s ‘Hello’ is finally going mainstream in America. The single has already reigned hard and vacated the throne in most territories but now that the song is featured in a random commercial and promos for Zooey Deschanel‘s TV show New Girl, things are starting to heat up on the US Billboard Hot 100. ‘Hello’ moves to a new peak of #46 there this week. The song has already spent four weeks at #1 on the American dance airplay charts.

Lady Gaga‘s Born This Way spends its second week on top of the Billboard Hot 100 despite reports of an 84% drop in second-week sales. Maybe this was why will.i.am felt the need to tweet-endorse the record yesterday? It has been widely speculated that Adele‘s 21 will reclaim the top spot. If she does, it’ll be the album’s tenth non-consecutive week on top of the Billboard charts. ‘Rolling In The Deep’ remains at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jennifer Lopez‘s ‘I’m Into You’ creeps back up the Billboard Hot 100 to #96 this week. It’s interesting to note its slow progress but turns out, the song hasn’t actually been serviced to American mainstream radios. According to The Prophet Blog, Def Jam pulled back the radio impact date because ‘On The Floor’ was still going hard. ‘I’m Into You’ is set to hit US Mainstream/Top 40 radios on 14 June. We might start seeing some proper chart action after.

Have you clocked mami ending careers with her So You Think You Can Dance performance?:

Kelly Rowland‘s ‘Motivation’ spends its second week on top of the US R&B charts. The gorgeous diva is now confident enough to bring her album release date forward so mark your calendars, Here I Am is expected to arrive in America on 26 July. Yes, kids. Just a month after Queen B drops 4. Michelle, gurl, you ready? We got August all clear for you.

Chart snack of the week:

Major Lazer‘s ‘Pon De Floor’ is back in fashion thanks to Beyonce‘s ‘Run The World (Girls)’ giving it a second wind. The track is currently at #104 on our Australian iTunes. It’s a current fave on my strut playlist and let me tell you, you better give the council a call because when I come through, I’m tearing up the pavement with this track.

  1. Couldn’t be happier that Nicole’s got another Top 3 smash! I’m so loving ‘Right There’, at this point, it’s my most favorite of the year… even more than ‘Don’t Hold Your Breath’!

    And…
“Michelle, gurl, you ready? We got August all clear for you.”

I cracked up at this. Hopefully she’ll be making a comeback too! I’m so happy that Kelly is riding high right now, it’s more than appropriate! :D

    • Have you heard a snippet of that Michelle Euro-dance track I posted? LOL. Ending careers!

  2. Oh God, yes! How could I forget about that. Yep, it’s a proper corker and definitely ending careers. Especially Beyonce’s.

Anyway, it’s going to be interesting to see how Kelly and Michelle fare in Europe, especially now that both of them are doing dance music. I agree with your past remark about Kelly being the “Donna Summer of our generation”, but what will Michelle turn out to be? Let’s just watch this space, then.
