Is it a touch too harsh to say that Kelly Brianne Clarkson typically makes forgettable music videos that either a) deliver expected wind machine moments, b) feature some sort of rocking out on stage or c) both?
It is this general ennui with any KC visuals that kept me from waiting by the VeVo post for ‘Mr Know It All”s premiere. However, when I did eventually give in, I was actually pleasantly surprised with the level of thought and finesse invested into it.
‘Mr Know It All’ sees the Americal Idol warbler face up on all the negative press re: her getting pressed over the leaked tracks, label issues and of course, her curves – demonstrating how all that fuss stands between her and her music. Video director Justin Francis (the man behind clips like Alicia Keys‘ ‘Unbreakable’) sets up a wall of newspaper clippings bearing those sensationalist headlines and has it symbolically shadowing Clarkson’s band as some sort of representation of how people only see the press but not the art happening behind it all. Y’all copy that?
On top of all that, Kelly’s actually looking pretty style correct herself. No, she’s never gonna be that popstar that wows us with couture creations and extravagant wigs so don’t even clock her in that department. There appears to be enough of that around the Top 40. Ms Clarkson has always done her in the most unpretentious of ways and one doesn’t expect the spunky girl-next-door image to evolve any time soon. The 29-year old has sold over 23 million albums and 36 million singles worldwide since she came out in 2003 – and she didn’t accomplish that with elaborate costumery or trend-hiking. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
This Stronger era will paint Kelly’s signature pop/rock formula out with a slightly more diverse palette as new writers and producers like Darkchild (hit maker for Lady Gaga and Beyoncé), Ester Dean (Keri Hilson and Rihanna), and Toby Gad (Fergie and Nadine Coyle) are called in, as well as country star Jason Aldrean. Thanks to all the leaks, them Clarkson fans now know that quality is pretty much assured for this era ahead of its release.
Kelly Clarkson‘s ‘Mr Know It All’ entered and peaked at #18 on the US Billboard Hot 100, making it her highest debut since ‘Never Again’. The song has also gone #24 in Canada, #25 in Australia and #17 in New Zealand. Ms Kelly is currently here in Australia on a quick promo trip that includes a performance at the NRL Grand Finals this Sunday.
