How are they already sounding way beyond their years for their second single? ‘Gotta Be You’ actually feels like a One Direction single from their third album – established, mature yet still unbelievably addictive.
The massive X Factor-formed boyband absolutely shut it down with their debut ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, a straight-up guitar-driven pop tune that stands in a league of its own where so many of their contemporaries are hitting up synth-driven, dance sonics. They continue to exceed expectations with ‘Gotta Be You’, this time showcasing the strength of their vocals in a string-soaked masterpiece that recall the efforts of the best 90s boyband ballads. And you know I’m a sucker for pop songs that create lift off in the chorus.
Take a listen to the world premiere of One Direction‘s ‘Gotta Be You’ on Scott Mills‘ radio show yesterday:
The mass hysteria that followed this world-first listen absolutely tasered the internet and it’s easily to see why One Direction‘s easily going to be the biggest thing to come out of the 2010 X Factor line-up. They’re able to back up the hype with decent pop song choices, good looks, and appropriate styling. They really are on track to become the next generation’s global boy band sensation – yes, even slaying the likes of JLS and The Wanted combined.
One Direction will release ‘Gotta Be You’ on 13 November in the UK and the eagerly anticipated debut album – Up All Night – will follow on 21 November. The lads’ first single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ is now out on Australian iTunes.
