Glee poster girl sexes up her image for the only decent pop hit on her album. Basically, Lea Michele isn’t playing around any more. She wants ‘On My Way’ to make an impact and she’s pulling all stops and booty shorts.
I mean, come on, the opening shot is a close up of her derriere.
The video, shot in California, sees Lea in a retro-styled motel getting intimate with a scruffy dude. It’s a painfully familiar video concept with frame after framed of recycled imagery we’ve seen before in Christina Aguilera‘s ‘Your Body’ and Katy Perry‘s ‘Teenage Dream’ (just to name a few).
Between the intimate scenes, we’re treated to cuts of Lea and her beer-guzzling mates taking a road trip – not unlike ‘Teenage Dream’. The same shots of riding in a vintage car with the top down, hair and various bits of fabric flagging in the wind.
I mean, I want to commend Team Lea for making a deliberate effort to pitch her as whole-package popstar, one who can effortlessly canvass radio with a catchy tune and also TV with a youthful-looking video.
However, someone should have taken that car and driven it a little further in search of a fresh concept.
‘On My Way’ is the only cracking pop uptempo on Lea Michele’s debut album Louder. The track is co-written by Fernando Garibay (who has penned lightning fierce tunes for Lady Gaga and Sugababes‘ ill-fated Sweet 7 album) and produced by The Monsters and the Strangerz, who have hemmed records for Fifth Harmony and Kylie Minogue‘s ‘Sexercize’.
