“There shouldn’t be much to report on this week’s Chart Feed because Beyoncé had her baby and nothing else would be on the news, right?” Sometimes I feel like my little brother is the only one who gets the way the world should be run.
On this week’s Chart Feed, the festive season’s definitely been canned now with Michael Bublé‘s career-defining Christmas album freefalling out of the Top 20 everywhere. We all knew it would come to this. Meanwhile, Empress Adele returns to top the US and UK album charts and comes closer to breaking more records, Kelly Clarkson discounts her way back up the charts, and I have a fit over the new Will Young, The Saturdays and Rebecca Ferguson single choices.
Happy new year, y’all. I don’t know who approved my time off last Monday but I’m sorry for leaving y’all without a Christmas week chart feed.
I am back on the grind tonight because I know we need to start this year right. It’s such a traditionally quiet time of the year for music sales, technically all your underachieving faves should be making the Top 10 with no effort at all. But of course, there aren’t ever any surprises when you’re expecting it.
This week’s chart highlights include Michael Buble‘s record-breaking Christmas sales that has cancelled everything he’s put out before this year, Sia‘s third consecutive Aussie Top 30 appearance in five months, Havana Brown‘s American crossover, and shit loads more.
Cher Lloyd just inadvertently despatched gigabytes of “fuck you” to all her haters and detractors this morning when her debut single ‘Swagger Jagger’ swooped in to claim the UK #1 spot. The X Factor femmecee’s intensely “disliked” single managed to sell 66,815 copies in its opening week to dislodge fellow show alumni JLS from the top. ‘Swagger Jagger’ was simultaneously released in the US and with chalk all promotion, yet it somehow succeeded in climbing to #992 on the American iTunes charts. Noteworthy, I know. Despite the opening there, Cher told Digital Spy that she isn’t really gagging for a State-side domination (just yet).
“Put it this way, I’m not going to run before I can walk. I hate it when people say ‘cracking the US’ – I actually really don’t mind whether I do or not. I’m not living in the US, I didn’t grow up there, and success out there would be lovely, but I want to conquer this part of the world first.” Sensible lass.
Gotye and Kimbra‘s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ steps up to #3 on the ARIA charts this week. Y’all do realise that these two are now sharing intimate breathing spaces with the likes of Adele, Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera, right? It is remarkable. Safe to say, the key sales propellant in the last week would have been from both Gotye and Kimbra‘s appearance at Splendour in The Grass.

Jessica Mauboy‘s ‘Inescapable’ may have snuck in at the rectum of the Top 20 last week but it has crawled its way well up the pipes to land at #10 this week. I don’t think she was droppin’ and poppin’ it at Splendour, so I reckon some other equally effective promo work must’ve taken place in the last week. Our Aussie urban pop princess will be doing an in-store signing at Sanity in Sydney’s Narrelan Town Centre on 13 August to celebrate the launch of her Get ‘Em Girls deluxe package. Go say ‘hi’ and have her sign a boob or something. Side bar: is that where all popstars have to go for in-store signings now that Hum Records on Oxford Street has gone belly up?
Jack Vidgen – our nation’s newly crowned teen vocal talent – sees his debut single ‘Yes I Am’ crack our ARIA charts at #35 this week. After snatching the crown on Australia’s Got Talent, the 14-year old warbler inked a deal with Sony Music Australia and released ‘Yes I Am’ – a track he co-wrote with famed vocal coach Erana Clark (whose CV boasts work on Australian Idol and X Factor‘s super girlband Mahogany). I think it’s terrific that he’s co-written his first single. Let’s hope it secures him a decent sum so that if public interest dries up in three months, he’s still got enough lunch money to last him ’til Year 10. Jack’s production line album of covers will pop out on 19 August. You bet it’ll feature that rousing rendition of Adelegend‘s ‘Set Fire to The Rain’.

Demi Levato‘s ‘Skyscraper’ cracks our ARIA Top 50 at #45 this week, believe it or not, the song fared better in New Zealand where it debuted at #9 last week. ‘Skyscraper’ scrapes in as the tenth most added new song to Aussie radios this week. The last time I saw something I liked come in that low on the local radio addition list, I held my breath and said a prayer. God evidently did not want to be bothered with such trivial shit around because Nicole Scherzinger‘s ‘Poison’ still went largely slept on by the Australian public.
Rihanna‘s sixth Loud single ‘Cheers (Drink To That)’ is the most added song on Australian radios this week. The song also makes its debut on our ARIA charts at #46 but surely with such early radio support, we can expect for it to go well into the Top 30 next Monday. It has always been so effortless for Rihanna to get a Top 20 hit here. She need not bend over and take up a rapper to make her single hot. It just sells. ‘Cheers (Drink To That)’ starts charting at #91 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Lady Gaga‘s cigarette-totting new single ‘You and I’ is the fifth most added song on Australian radios this week. Things may only be heating up for the single at this stage but as of June, Nielsen Soundscan reports that ‘You and I’ had already sold over 124,000 digital downloads in the States – way before it was confirmed to be the fourth Born This Way single. Meanwhile, ‘The Edge of Glory’ ascends to the top of the US Billboard Dance/Club charts becoming Mother Monster’s tenth consecutive #1 dance single. In fact, as you might’ve already guessed, every single Gaga has put out bar ‘Eh Eh’ (which technically wasn’t issued in the States) has gone #1 on the dance charts.
Marvin Priest and Wynter Gordon‘s ‘Take Me Away’ is the fourth most added new song to Aussie radios this week. As y’all know, my gurl has ‘Buy My Love’ lined up as her next solo single but them new side collabos keep sprouting out like daisies on a well-manured garden bed [Editor’s note: peculiar analogy but I’ll let it slide]. Over the weekend, she premiered a new track with Steve Aoki titled ‘Ladi Dadi’, which will be on Steve’s forthcoming album.
While we wait for ‘Buy My Love’ to impact Australian media, here’s a delicious new remix by Loud Manners (who has done club-ready mixes for the likes of Jessica Mauboy and Zoe Badwi). I am totally living for this:
Adele‘s ‘Someone Like You’ may still be reigning on top of the ARIA charts and sending bitches to the bathroom sobbing every time it comes on at work, but its follow up ‘Set Fire to The Rain’ is quietly bowing out. It’s them cursed dance remixes, I tell ya. ‘Set Fire to The Rain’ only managed to so far peak at #45 in Australia – this week, it slides to #50. This might have something to do with radios not ready to move past ‘Someone Like You’ just yet. Over in the US, the Gossip-styled ‘Rumour Has It’ begins charting at #96 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It would make for a very sensible future US single, working off the success of ‘Rolling In The Deep’.
Alexandra Stan‘s ‘Mr Saxobeat’ debuts at #34 on our Australian digital charts. It really helped having the single strategically placed on the iTunes home page all week, y’all. I caught up with the Romanian dance/pop princess last Tuesday and I’m just about ready to let you have our interview chat. [Editor’s note: highlight – “Alexandra, do you work out to your own music?”]
Benny Benassi‘s ‘Cinema’ propels to #28 on the ARIA charts this week while the brilliant Skrillex remix cracks our digital charts at #40. I actually favour the Skrillex remix more than I do the radio/original version, y’guys. Maybe that’s the song’s destined path of entry into my heart. I mean, I didn’t warm to Kelly Rowland‘s ‘Motivation’ until I fell for the Diplo remix. Sometimes, it takes a good remix to turn the ship around.

The Panics‘ fourth studio album Rain on the Humming Wire is the highest selling new album in Australia this week, debuting at #7. The next biggest new release on the line is Falling In Reverse‘s The Drug In Me Is You at #21. All excellent music I should be checking out rather than revisit Victoria Beckham’s discography.
Darren Hayes‘ ‘Talk Talk Talk’ moves back up the ARIA Australian charts to #18 this week. Y’know, I see Wes Carr up in here, I see Shannon Noll doing his thing, I even see novelty shit like s.mouse happening but I don’t see Vanessa Amorosi‘s ‘Gossip’. Should we send out a search party? I mean, how dire is the situation? She sent out a cute email to her fans last week about her buying a pony and while it made me think that she should be riding it from town to town purveying her single, I think the more dignified approach would be to do more media appearances. PS – “Popstar Rides Pony to Flog Single” would make for a terrific headline. Just saying.
OK, steering back from that V Mama tangent, s.mouse‘s ‘Slap My Elbow’ has debuted at #21 on the UK independent singles chart while Darren Hayes‘ ‘Talk Talk Talk’ cracks further down the line at #35. Isn’t that scary that Angry Boys is having an impact overseas?
The Wanted is doing a splendid job holding onto Top 3 position in the UK but it shan’t be long before they unveil their plans for global domination. According to our friends at auspOp, the five lads are headed to Australia for the first time next month to talk up the single ‘Glad You Came’ and drum up interest in their music. This should be an interesting watch. As it is with every fresh-faced act cracking a foreign market for the first time, it could go either way. First impressions can be hard to manage. I am instantly reminded of Girls Aloud‘s one and only promo trip here circa ‘Biology’. The Wanted‘s label has pushed back the local release date for ‘Glad You Came’ to this coming Friday. Let the talk, talk, talk begin.

Amy Winehouse enjoys a second week of strong posthumous record sales with Back to Black staying on top of the UK charts and Frank rising to #3. Over on the flip side, her singles are falling rapidly down the charts. I guess it doesn’t matter when they’re still selling that many albums. Here’s something her label might want to do if they want to commemorate Wino’s singles – how about pressing limited edition vinyl singles complete with aged, vintage-style sleeves? It’ll make for a very fetch collector’s item, I’m sure.
Christina Perri‘s ‘Jar of Hearts’ shoots from #46 to #17 in the UK this week while over here in Australia, the single still holds tight to the Top 5. I’m glad she’s making such a splash with this track but does anyone know if this woman has any other potential hits in waiting? I clocked a follow up single – ‘Arms’ – but after five months, it hasn’t moved any further than #94 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The video premiered and nothing happened. The album came out and was preceded with four digital promo singles like they’ve staged for Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lopez‘s heavily anticipated albums but unlike those campaigns, none of Christina’s tracks charted in the Top 100. I don’t know much about algebra but 1 hit + 5 flops don’t equal success.
David Guetta featuring Taio Cruz and Ludacris‘ ‘Little Bad Girl’ leaps to Top 5 of the UK digital charts this week. Meanwhile, while you’re hitting download on that you might’ve noticed another new Guetta track up for grabs. ‘Titanium’ featuring our Aussie indie pop pin-up Sia was launched as the French DJ’s new digital promo single on Friday. It is truly my obsession right now and I don’t think I’ve fallen so hard and so quickly for any Guetta track since Kelly Rowland‘s ‘Commander’.

Salt N Pepa‘s classic ‘Push It’ has somehow pussy popped its way back to prominence, leaping from #57 to #38 on the UK urban charts this week. News just broke today that the duo are touring Australia in late November to early December, bringing what’s been pitched as a celebration of their ten year anniversary. ‘Push It’, ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’ and ‘Shoop’ – you best believe you’ll be getting your groove on with these memaws.
Robyn‘s Body Talk Pt. 3 EP is still charting pretty strongly amongst newer and heavier compilations on the UK dance Top 20. I am surprised y’all but all sweet feelings are quickly lost when I think of Robyn not re-scheduling her Aussie tour. The depths of my sadness cannot be fathomed. The Swedish pop minx was seen on Jay Leno last week co-flogging Rye Rye‘s ‘Never Be Mine’, which evidently samples her old hit ‘Be Mine!’. Watch the performance here.
Kelly Rowland‘s Here I Am entered at #3 on the US Billboard 200 last Wednesday with a cracking 77,000 first week sales. This is the highest debuting and highest charting album in Kelendria’s solo discography – there’s bound to be plenty of celebratory “champagne spillin’ from the wall”. I know some stans are pressed that Kelly didn’t do enough promo work to ensure a stronger entry but fuck that ignorance, seriously. As she explained in her That Grape Juice interview, it was a tricky time to secure TV promos because several key shows are off air in between seasons right now. I don’t see it bettering its peak of #3 but what I’m sure Team Kelly will do is keep this album selling hard in the long term. Flash opening week sales aren’t everything, you know. Over here in Australia, Here I Am debuts at #15 on our urban charts and #45 on the digital charts.
Joss Stone‘s new independently released album LP1 debuts at #9 in the US, selling over 30,000 first week copies. She managed to pull off some decent TV performances to fanfare her return – check: Regis and Kelly, Jay Leno and Craig Ferguson. LP1 is Mama Stone’s third consecutive Top 10 album in the States and it’s actually her second highest chart placement since 2007’s Introducing… Joss Stone.
Katy Perry‘s ‘Last Friday Night (TGIF)’ was hyped to snatch the top spot last week instead, it stayed at its current peak of #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. There’s a bit of pressure for Pyrotitty Kitty to match Michael Jackson‘s record of eight #1 singles from one album and while ‘TGIF’ is only Teenage Dream‘s fifth single, she’s had an untainted run of four consecutive #1s up to this point. They’re not about to break this dream run without a fight so here comes the rabbit out of the hat: a new remix of ‘TGIF’ featuring Missy Elliott.
Yes, boo. They’re rushing this exciting new remix of ‘Last Friday Night’ to US radios today in hopes of propelling the single to the top. I’ve written a nice, intelligent news piece on this remix single phenomenon here.

Jennifer Lopez‘s ‘I’m Into You’ has finally ascended to the US Billboard Top 50. It has only taken 11 weeks to get this far and I know radio support has been strong for it during the summer. Speaking of radio, I am slightly worried by the lack of radio love for ‘Papi’ Down Under. I’m sorry, you guys don’t get to toy with J.Lo fans by loving hard on one single and not the others, OK? This is not acceptable – especially when something as good and promising as ‘Papi’ is on the line. Are there any dance-related programs happening on free-to-air channels at the moment because I sense a good placement.

DJ Havana Brown’s debut vocal single ‘We Run The Night’ is the highest charting new single here this week, entering at #7. She’s been heading up her own dance compilations for years and now, supporting Britney, Rihanna, Chris Brown and Pussycat Dolls on tour but the siren of the turntables is now serving it up from behind the mic. According to The Music Network, the ‘We Run The Night’ is also the fifth most added new song to Australian radios this week.
David Guetta’s pumping new single ‘Where Them Girls At’ featuring Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj debuts at #3 in the UK and #34 in Australia this week. Other dance songs making an impact here include The Potbelleez’s new smash ‘From The Music’, flying up to #16 this week on our singles charts, and Grant Smillie and Zoe Badwi’s new single ‘Carry Me Home’debuting at #36 on the Australian club charts. The original single edit is set to premiere later this week.
Wynter Gordon’s ‘Til Death’ isn’t exactly living it up. I now have grave fears that it’ll never achieve the same ubiquity ‘Dirty Talk’ enjoyed here over summer. The song slides from #21 to #24 on the ARIA singles chart this week while the remixes shoot up to #5 on our Australian club chart. I’m starting to see parallels between this and Zoe Badwi’s ‘Accidents Happen’, which also failed to match the success of its preceding single. Over in the UK, Wynter’s ‘Dirty Talk’ rises to #25. Let’s see what a bit of promo can do for it there.
Skrillex’s defining EP Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites cracks the Aussie album charts at #39 this week. Absolutely loving the filthy, sinister beats he’s serving – it’s just the kind of dark dubstep/electronica persuasion I need in my life right now.
Rupaul’s Glamazon struts onto the US Billboard Dance charts at #11 this week, selling over 2000 first-week copies. The record is only available digitally at the moment and when it comes to individual track sales, the Glamazon tracks pulled a collective 6000 downloads with ‘Superstar’ leading the pack with 3,000 copies sold. Glamazon is Mother Ru’s fifth studio album and her third to appear on the Billboard Dance/Electronic album chart – its predecessors include 2009’s Champion (#12) and 2004’s Red Hot (#4). The drag superstar’s first two albums aren’t noted because they were released before the goddamn dance charts were even created. Werk!
Jennifer Lopez’s Love? debuts at #6 in the UK and #11 in Australia this week. Here’s what’s really jacked up about the whole deal. I rushed out the very Friday the record came out in stores only to find that they were only stocking the standard edition of Love? – which is fine if you’re content with being viciously robbed of one more amazing Wynter Gordon track (‘Everybody’s Girl’). The deluxe edition – featuring four bonus tracks – is available online, though. So make sure you inspect the aforementioned track and ‘Charge Me Up’, an energetic sister track to ‘Invading My Mind’ and ‘Hypnotico’. J.Lo’s new single ‘I’m Into You’ is nowhere to be found in our ARIA Top 50 and over in the UK, it’s just entered at #40 this week. We’ll have to wait ‘til Wednesday to see where the album lands in the US. Nobody’s holding hopes for a Top 5 entry.
Adele’s 21 celebrates its 14th week at #1 in the UK and second week on top of the Australian album charts. According to The Music Network, the project’s lead single ‘Rolling In The Deep’ is picking up significant support from Nova and Today networks, and is steadily moving up the airplay charts. Over in the UK, ‘Set Fire to The Rain’ soars to #44 on the singles chart while album track ‘Turning Tables’ rises from #135 to #62, boosted by Gwyneth Paltrow’s Glee cover which debuts at #75 this week.
Jessie J’s third single ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ rises to #9 in the UK this week, making it the pop sensation’s third consecutive Top 10 smash. Could it go Top 3 like its predecessors? No pressure, boo. In Australia, ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ debuts at #63 on our airplay charts.
Blue’s comeback single slash Eurovision song ‘I Can’ debuts at #16. I’m gonna leave this right here with a couple of napkins, in case you need to wipe up after.
Ellie Goulding’s ‘Your Song’ comes throttling back up the UK charts this week, moving from #75 to #56, while her Lights album jumps up to #10. Over in the States, Ellie’s evidently won herself a few more fans after a golden performance on Saturday Night Live (this episode also featured Tina Fey, who Ellie has called her “favourite lady ever” – gold star sticker.) Ms Goulding told Billboard, “I had to do some promos with her yesterday, and everyone said I just turned into this weird shy girl around her.” I mean, wouldn’t you?
An Horse’s new album Walls debuts at #17 on the US Billboard Heatseekers’ chart this week. The Aussie duo’s been working it Stateside for a number of years now, first gaining prominence after touring with Tegan and Sara in 2008. Kelly Rowland’s ‘Motivation’ keeps ascending the US R&B charts, rising to a new peak of #6 this week. The single is currently placed at #43 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #38 on the digital charts. Elsewhere – because it’s schadenfreudic to make this kinda comparison – Beyonce’s ‘Run The World (Girls)’ is positioned at #41 on the US R&B charts, #48 on the Hot 100 and #39 on the digital charts. Looking outside the States, Kelly’s ‘Motivation’ has yet to appear on the UK and Aussie singles charts but B’s ‘Run The World’ drops to #19 and #21 there respectively.
Jennifer Hudson’s I Remember Me sinks from its #20 debut in the UK last week to #49. Promo work – where you at? The album, which was rush released to Aussie retailers, fails to impact our Top 50 this week [Editor’s note: OK, fine. It debuted at #20 on our ARIA urban chart]. I expect for things to improve when she arrives in Australia in a few weeks’ time. She has so far been confirmed to warble on Dancing With The Stars and Sunrise.
Random Aussie iTunes chart treasure of the day: All Saints‘s 200o splendour ‘Pure Shores’ is currently #97 on the dance chart and further down – because Natasha Bedingfield‘s ‘Pocketful of Sunshine’ is stupidly not made available in this country – some disgusting low-rent house cover of it by Jia Clayton‘s nabbing all the sales to chart at #192.
Lady Gaga‘s ‘Born This Way’ has broken ARIA chart record to be the biggest first week seller in Australia since Anthony Callea‘s ‘The Prayer’ back in 2004, according to AuspOp. ‘Born This Way’ effortlessly topped the charts here with certified gold sales, which usually denotes over 35,000 copies sold, and – as expected – it was also the most added new song to radios last week.
The new single also debuted straight at #1 in the US, making it her highest Billboard chart debut since ‘Bad Romance’, which only managed to enter at #9. Even more special, ‘Born This Way’ became the 1000th #1 single recorded in Billboard history and the 19th one ever to debut straight at the top.
Adele has become the first artist to have two singles and two albums in the UK Top five since The Beatles did so in 1964. Following the Brit Awards performance, her newest single ‘Someone Like You’ stormed to the top of the charts while its predecessor ‘Rolling In The Deep’ sits at #4. Adele‘s current album 21 remains in #1 position while her 2008 debut 19 sits at #4 this week. Believe it or not, ‘Someone Like You’ is Adele‘s very first UK #1 single. Tear jerker of the year, anyone?
Mumford & Sons are also enjoying a post-Brit Awards boost with their album Sigh No More rising to #2 this week in the UK. Elsewhere, Tinie Tempah‘s Disc-Overy rises to #6 there and makes a debut on our Aussie digital charts at #42.
Ke$ha‘s second Cannibal single ‘Blow’ starts charting at #24 in Australia this week. If it hadn’t been for the polarising demand for ‘Born This Way’, this track would’ve been the most added new track to Aussie radios. ‘Blow’ is co-written by Klas Ahlund, who is famed for working with Robyn and co-penning Britney‘s ‘Piece of Me’. Ke$ha is set to drop a remix album – imaginatively titled The Remix Album – here on 18 March. Stay tuned for the artwork and tracklisting.
Diddy – Dirty Money‘s biggest smash yet ‘Coming Home’ has finally cracked Australia, climbing to #13 this week. The rap mogul’s R&B/hip hop collective is made up of ex-Danity Kane diva Dawn Richard and upcoming singer/songwriter Kalenna Harper. However, this track features another soon-to-be ubiquitous artist – Skylar Grey – who ya’ll will also know as the vocalist on Eminem‘s latest single ‘I Need A Doctor’. Skylar is also credited as a co-writer on Slim‘s international smash: ‘Love The Way You Lie’.
Michael Buble‘s Crazy Love album finally knocks Pink from the top of the ARIAs after an unwavering 14-week reign. The crooner’s currently on tour swooning Aussie fans and charming TV watchers to no end, so it’s kinda expected. The Crazy Love tour will serenade Melbourne fans in Rod Laver Arena this week.
Hillsong United‘s latest worship album Aftermath is the most downloaded album in Australia this week. Pause. The monster Pentecostal church’s record debuted at #4 on the main charts, making it the biggest selling new album in the country. Praise Allah.
Cut Copy‘s Zonoscope drops ten places to #13 this week but fear not, the Melbourne band has released a marvy new video to whet your appetite. Check out the visuals for the second single ‘Need You Now’:
Zonoscope debuts at #46 on the US Billboard 200 this week and #5 on the Billboard Indie Album chart.
American electro dub step meister Skrillex‘s new EP – Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites – debuts at #9 on our Aussie digital charts this week. His biggest mainstream acknowledgement to date is probably for the ace remixes of Gaga‘s ‘Bad Romance’ and ‘Alejandro’ – the former was included on the Japanese edition of Mother Monster‘s The Remix compilation. Skrillex has been picked up by Warner Music Australia’s boutique dance label Neon Records, which currently house heavyweights like TV Rock, Denzal Park and Zoe Badwi.

Roxette‘s Charm School debuts at #32 on our Aussie digital charts this week. This marks the popular Swedish duo’s first album of original material in 10 years.
Take That‘s romping new single ‘Kidz’ shoots to #31 in the UK this week. Why has it taken so long to drop a follow up to ‘The Flood’? I guess, it don’t matter what single’s on the radio if your album’s already selling so damn well. It’s been said for awhile that ‘SOS’ could be the follow up track but I wholeheartedly approve either way. Can’t wait to see what they come up with for the video. ‘Kidz’ – the single – will feature a previously unreleased track titled ‘Rocket Ship’.
Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith‘s ‘Never Say Never’ shoots to #49 on the UK charts this week following a little Grammy fever. Trivia: Travis Garland recorded a demo of the track, which was originally titled ‘Sexy Together’. Bieber basically came in and re-wrote it to something more age and demographic appropriate. I’m sure you can find ‘Sexy Together’ somewhere on the interwebs, if you’re hard keen enough. Never Say Never: The Remixesis out in Australia this Friday.
You know how the American charts bore me senseless, right? Check out this new addition Billboard has introduced to their all inclusive chart family. The Billboard Uncharted – which launched last month in the US – ranks artists who have yet to appear on any Billboard charts but have been gaining popularity through internet media. The chart data is determined by views from social media sites like YouTube, MySpace and Twitter etc. Interesting stuff for us taste makers who are always looking for the next fresh thing.
Check out this week’s Uncharted chartand see who’s making a splash. The only artists I’ve come across so far are Girl Talk, Pomplamoose, Anna Calvi, Hayden Panatierre (yes, hurr) and Sam Tsui (YouTube his emotive piano based cover of Britney‘s ‘Hold It Against Me’).
Not that Mothers’ Day presents should be about what I want, but I wish I had picked Tina Arena’s Live: The Onstage Collection over Celine Dion’s concert DVD now. I’m sure mum would’ve preferred an intimate and engaged performance over a grand stage with travelators. Mama Tina’s live CD/DVD combo debuted at #22 in Australia this week while Mama Celine’s package entered the UK charts at #11.
It’s clear no one’s buying this shit. Brian McFadden’s Wall of Soundz is set to drop out of our Top 50 after just three weeks on the shelves. The album slipped from a barely adequate debut of #27 to #45 this week. Brian recently tweeted that he’s threatening a Wall of Soundz 2. Landfill department, you have been warned.
If no one’s downloading Christina Aguilera’s new single, they’re certainly buying them in stores. ‘Not Myself Tonight’ has finally charted in Australia, entering at #22 this week and we can probably attribute sales to physical copies. It is the sixth best selling single in stores this week. ‘Not Myself Tonight’ also debuted at #12 in the UK this week.
Rihanna‘s ‘Te Amo’ debuts at #35 in Australia this week. The video was reportedly shot in France last month featuring French supermodel Laetitia Casta. Is it too much to ask for a lesbian scene?
It’s been a 10-week long crescendo but Alexandra Burke’s ‘All Night Long’ has finally cracked the UK Top 10 this week. The single currently sits at #8, matching the peak of ‘Broken Heels’. I wonder if Simon Cowell’s noticed. Probably not. Between his multi-million dollar cash cow SuBo and world domination with X Factor, he hasn’t got time for the likes of ABurke.
I’ve got a horrible sinking feeling about this. Much like the feeling you get when your favourite goldfish goes belly up on you. Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s ‘Bittersweet’ is floundering on the UK charts – and you know to admit defeat when your single tumbles from a feeble debut of #25 to #54 in a week.
Lady Gaga‘s The Remix compilation debuts at #3 in the UK this week. While I love knowing there’s two different tracklistings out there, it’s annoying that two of my favourite remixes on the Japanese edition – Crookers‘ ‘Telephone’ remix and Skrillex‘s ‘Bad Romance’ mix – have been omitted from the international version. The Remix sits at #13 in Australia this week.
Keane’s Night Train EP has debuted at #1 this week, making it the band’s fourth consecutive chart topper on the UK album charts.
Toni Braxton‘s Pulse didn’t do so bad after all, selling over 54,000 copies in its first week to debut at #9 in the US. She must be jizzing herself because all three singles have pretty much tanked in the States. Pulse debuts at #28 in the UK this week.
I don’t know a thing about Josh Turner but judging by his hunky smile on the album cover, I think I’d like to know more. His album Haywire (see above) leapt from #94 to #74 on the US charts this week. I’m gonna say looks had nothing to do with it.
Eminem’s ‘Not Afraid’ has debuted on top of the US charts this week. Believe it or not, this is only Slim’s third US #1 single ever. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve heard an Eminem song since ‘Mockingbird’ and ‘Ass Like That’ – I’ve booty bounced to the latter on numerous occasions at Heaven’s Door.
LaRoux is at the cusp of cracking the US Top 20 – ‘Bulletproof’ rose to #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. Elsewhere, Macy Gray‘s comeback single ‘Beauty In The World’ moved up to #7 on the US Dance charts.
